Poland’s Road to Freedom: Celebrating Independence Day
Poland’s journey to independence is a testament to its resilience and national unity. After being partitioned in the late 18th century by Russia, Prussia, and Austria, Poland vanished from the map of Europe for 123 years. It finally regained sovereignty on November 11, 1918, following the end of World War I, when the collapse of the partitioning empires allowed the nation to re-emerge. Independence was further solidified by the Treaty of Versailles (1919) and defended through a series of border conflicts in the years that followed. However, this hard-won freedom was tragically interrupted in 1939, when Germany and the Soviet Union invaded Poland at the outbreak of World War II.
