SU Sightseeing in London: Trip to Lord's Cricket Ground

By Your SU and Animesh Jaswant Kaushal

On Thursday 27th February, Your SU took a group of students to Lord’s Cricket Ground for a private tour. This trip was made possible through the determination and community organising of our students. Read more below on how we turned a dream into a reality for Animesh Jaswant Kaushal and the International Sports Society.

Why did you want to visit Lord’s?

Lord's Cricket Ground was my dream as a child. It is a temple – the Home of Cricket. It is the place where cricket originated and an incredible venue that international cricketers play. Cricket has been a passion for me my whole life, and like a lot of other Asian students, I love the sport and its history. I have played cricket all my life and this was the perfect way to complete my time at university. When I entered the ground from the Grace Gate, it was a blast of emotions and a flashback from my journey.

How did you make this trip happen?

I have been passionate about students getting involved in cricket and having more sports opportunities on campus. I started the International Sports Society to show that there was an appetite from fellow students. With two friends, we approached the SU, and they took us through the society formation process. This explained how a society is run, funded and organised. It was a much easier process than we thought! We just had to explain why the society was important, what the purpose was and the benefits to students.

The next step was securing the funding. As a Society, we applied for the Society Development Fund which any student group can apply for. We wanted the trip to be available to as many students as possible, but we still wanted students to contribute to show their commitment. The trip would have been £25.70 per student but with the student group funding, it was only £10. It would have been impossible to go on our own without this.

The event was on posters, emails and on social media to raise awareness of this fantastic opportunity.
