President: Sunderland, Ade, attends Parliament for National Lobby Day

By President: Sunderland, Ade Adeoye

11th of March was National Lobby Day at Parliament where Sunderland Students' Union joined other Student Unions from around the country for one purpose.

President: Activities Prince Ikechi

Students lobbying outside of Parliament with placards that say 'Fix Student Loans'.

Campaigns to our MP's to:

  • Reverse the freeze on student loan repayment thresholds
  • Reform interest rates so balances do not grow faster than repayments
  • Introduce clearer, fairer terms that don't penalise lower and middle earners.

'Investment into our future should not come with an unfair burden'

Sunderland Students as well as students of the North East feel the weight of these loans. Ilsa Hartley from Newcastle Univeristy student union joined me in meeting with Sunderland Central MP Lewis Atkinson and Middlesbrough South & East Cleveland MP Luke Myer at Westminster; pushing for these changes to be made. An Inquiry has been won after the lobby day but the race isn't over. Only with keeping up the pressure can we see a chance for meaningful change. https://committees.parliament.uk/work/9682/student-loans-and-taxation-of-graduates/
