President: Activities October 2023 Update

By President: Activities - Prince Ikechi

In October, I was able to make progress in achieving my set-out manifesto objectives. These are centered around advocating for a payment plan option for self-funding students and tackling recruitment agent integrity on a national scale to regulate their activities, while enhancing the transparency and reliability of information shared with international students gaining admission to study at UK universities.

I was able to meet with the University’s Director of International Office and there were some encouraging take-aways from this, as there is an ongoing plan between Your SU and International Office to collaborate in the process of international students’ recruitment. We hope that SU involvement in this process would help to ensure reliable information is provided to international students, so that they can better plan for their study at the University of Sunderland.

Manifesto Endorsement

Meanwhile, the recently held Students’ Union Council meeting has endorsed my manifesto’s mandate. As another aspect of this, there is an ongoing plan to launch a North-East coalition of students to lobby decision makers at All Party Parliamentary Group for stiffer regulations on the international student recruitment market.

In addition, a petition has been drafted to run an online student vote to support the campaign for a payment plan for self-funding students with the aim of alleviating the financial burden on students and providing more flexible and manageable ways to meet their academic expenses.
