By President: Activities - Prince Ikechi

Hello everyone!

As November draws to a close, I’d like to share updates on our collective efforts and the strides we’ve made in the month of November at Your SU.

Campaign Priorities Presented to the Students’ Union and University Exec Meeting

Early in November, we, the Elected Officers, laid out critical campaign priorities for this academic year. I will be campaigning to address student concerns and improve support systems on:

  • Cost of Living Support Services at the University of Sunderland - We are committed to ensuring all students understand and access the cost-of-living support services available at the University. Transparent information is vital in empowering students to make informed decisions that ease financial pressures.
  • Improving Public Transport Accessibility - Leveraging opportunities through the North East Devolved Authority, we aim to advocate for improved public transport services. Our focus is to make commuting affordable and accessible, enhancing students' overall university experience.
  • Renters’ Rights and Accommodation Campaign - As part of a national campaign with National Union of Students, we are pushing to scrap guarantor requirements for student rentals, thus pushing for a fairer rental condition and exploring improvements and reform on the Renters' Rights Bill. These steps will better support students navigating the housing market.

Members Meeting

We held a productive Members Meeting, which included recommendations for our Democracy and Governance Review. These proposed changes were passed in a vote conducted with the students present. The proposals focus on devolving power from central roles to empower a wider group of students to actively engage with Your SU. This shift is expected to foster inclusivity and broader participation in decision-making processes.

Closing Thoughts

It’s been a month of impactful conversations and actionable strategies. The Winter Graduations this year were awesome. It was an honour to witness the joy and pride of our graduates and other recipients being recognised with Honorary Doctorate awards for their achievements. I’m grateful for the continued support and engagement from our student body. Let’s keep the momentum going as we work together to create meaningful change.

As always, if you have questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
