Hi everyone!
As it’s my first update blog of 2024, may I use the opportunity to extend my best wishes for a happy new year. I hope you all had a rejuvenating holiday? I am thrilled and excited to share highlights of December and January’s events and activities and insights into the ongoing activities at Your SU.
President: Activities Prince Ikechi
Let’s start by reflecting on the accomplishments and events of December. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible support and enthusiasm you all showed during the campaign in the signing of the petition, in which we are advocating for the introduction of a more flexible student-centric approach for payment plan options for tuition fees, specifically tailored for self-funded students. It will please you to know that the petition signing received excellent support as we recorded 1,022 votes. The outcome of the votes has signalled a strong mandate to lobby the university and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the concerns and aspirations expressed in the petition by students are given the attention it deserves. While Your SU continue to have discussions with the university, I encourage all students to continue to demonstrate their support and push further for the campaign to succeed.
The NUS Delegates Election was successful in electing five student delegates that I will be leading to represent Your SU at the NUS National Conference in April 2024. The delegates have decided on a motion titled “the negative effect of the current UK economic development on HE” to present at the conference, but before then the motion is expected to get an approval from the Union Council during the next meeting schedule to hold on 21st February.
Your SU hosted the 2023 annual Members’ Meeting tagged Holly Jolly Members Mingle, as it was combined with our Christmas party. We all got into the festive spirit and the meeting saw a huge turnout of students in attendance, breaking the record of our first ever quorate meeting over the past 10 years.
