The month of November was quite a busy month, as it was my month of graduation from the Business school. With the help of the SU team, I launched my key manifesto campaign through a petition via the “Change It” platform on our website, asking students to support and advocate for more flexible payment plans for tuition fees for self-funded students to be introduced at the University of Sunderland. The target is to get at least 1000 signatures within a period to evidence student’s need for a better way of managing their finances while at the University, considering the ongoing cost of living crisis in the United Kingdom. So far, the campaign within the campuses has recorded about 748 votes, as of 6th December. As earlier mentioned in my last article, my set-out manifesto goal is to advocate for the University to introduce more flexible payment plan options for self-funding students and tackling international recruitment agent integrity on a national scale to get the sector regulated to enhance the reliance and transparency of information being shared with prospective international students, while seeking to gain admission to study at UK universities.

I had several meetings and conversations about my campaign with University stakeholders, meeting with SLB support Officers, presenting my campaign update at the joint SU and University executive meeting, forming a campaign coalition of students and representatives from other North East SUs and meeting with Citizens UK. Following discussions with the University, I am looking forward to a better and well-structured option of providing support to students to ease their payment of tuition fees. Also, attention was particularly made to our new students, those who arrived late to campus due to late visa issuance, government policies and economic issues.
Further to promoting my campaign on a national level, the coalition of North East students and SU representatives was formed in alliance to engage with MPs and Reps to lobby government on issues affecting students and their constituents during the upcoming mayoral and general elections. Also, our Students’ Union joined Citizens UK in order to be more active with campaigning in the region to improve the lives of all, students or not. This year, Citizens UK will be championing matters relating to cost of living, housing, and racial justice in education.
