Want to know what being an Officer at Your SU involves? Between now and the end of Your Elections Nominations (18th Feb), we're speaking to some of our past officers on our website and socials about the steps involved in the journey if you are elected and what they learnt along the way.
Here, Entertainments and Media Officer 2009/10 Debbie Sykes-Waller talks about the importance of building networks and relationships with people, and the skills and opportunities that develop from that. Although the Entertainments and Media Officer role is not one that is part of our current team of Officers, these skills and opportunities are equally experienced across all the roles available now.

During her time as an Officer, Debbie had many great opportunities to build networks and relationships. This was an important aspect of the Entertainments and Media Officer and a skill that Debbie developed.
Debbie said: "One of the skills that I learned as I started to be present in the office was building relationships with the people in the office and building relationships with the venues in town. It was especially important for me as the Entertainments and Media officer to get to know which venues are safe but also fun for students to enjoy their time."
"I also went down to Bournemouth for a RAG conference, where I networked with a bunch of other RAG societies and executive officers. I also did Tees/Wear Varsity and managed to network with the Sports Institute by offering support."
