I am thrilled to share a significant achievement that is hugely important for a number of our students. Recently, we have successfully addressed the pressing issue of students facing Ref/Def status and the impact that this can have. This refers to students who have to resubmit or resit certain assessments or exams. Resitting assessments can be part of university life, but the date by which students receive their resubmission grades can jeopardise their academic progress and even their visa status, in some international student cases. Many international students are required to have obtained their grades in order for their visas to remain valid and to allow them to legally stay in the UK.
I have had a number of students recently approach me to say that they were not due to receive their resubmission grades until after their visas had expired. This was obviously a matter of concern, and it was important for us to help rectify this.

In order to do this, I reached out to the relevant University staff to bring this issue to their attention and to ask for changes to the dates of the Academic Boards, so that grades could be announced earlier and therefore the students could process their visa in plenty of time.
The most affected faculties by this issue were Technology and Business, impacting both undergraduate and postgraduate students. With the urgency of the situation, I convened meetings and collaborated with key stakeholders. My thanks go to fellow SU President (Education) Dola Dada, Mark Colman from International Student Support Management, and Programme Administration represented by Jonathan Spray for their work on this. I am very appreciative of the University staff’s collaboration and willingness to make changes to benefit our students.
In our meetings, I explained the potential mental health impact on affected students and asked what can be done to protect those students. I also asked to have the relevant assessment board meetings brought forward to allow for earlier decisions to be made and for system records to be updated. I am pleased to say that these suggested measures have been accepted and implemented.
