Campaign Updates

Proposal to review the Fit to Sit policy - Activities around this are gradually winding down as the proposal has been prepared and presented to the University's Senior Leadership Team. This proposal contained results from a survey conducted among students. Last month, further research was done by meeting with academics to get their insight and perspectives on the policy. A revision to the proposal is in progress and will be presented to the registry in the coming month.

Essay Mills - An investigation into the practices of essay mill vendors on social networking platforms has been completed. Our results and recommendations will be presented in a report that is now being developed to be presented to the University Executive by July.

Inductions - Discussions with Student Journey have culminated in an ongoing project by the University to look into welcome week activities for new students. It is hoped that recommendations from this group will be available in time to effect changes in the inductions for students in the next academic year.

Student Representation Conference

The Annual Student Representation Conference held in May was a remarkable success. Student Voice Reps, Course Reps, students and staff were in attendance to celebrate the amazing work reps have been doing over the past year. The reps shared several of their wins including setting up societies, initiating campaigns like the ‘Dead Name’ campaign to change the University's regulation mandating that students use their legal name on their ID cards rather than their chosen name. This was especially important for transgender and gender nonconforming students. Another win was the successful collaboration with university staff to address the central heating problems at St. Peter's campus leading to a better teaching and learning experience for both students and staff because of this.

One of the major topics of discussion at this year’s conference was the use of AI in the University and how this can be incorporated into the curriculum by different programs. This also included a discussion of the benefits and the challenges posed by generative AI in teaching, learning and assessments. Group sessions fostered the exchange of ideas and best practices. The conference concluded with an appreciation of the reps and all the staff who had contributed to the success of student representation in this academic year.
