By President: Activities - Prince Ikechi
Hello, everyone!
Welcome to my latest monthly blog! I’m pleased to be able to share some of April’s highlights and updates for my campaigns below, so let’s take a look!
President: Activities Prince Ikechi at NUS National Conference
Our engagement with the National Union of Students enables us to send a team of student representatives, or delegates, to the NUS National Conference, which took place in Blackpool last month.
Earlier in the year, you elected five delegates with the aim of working collectively as a team of student representatives for the University of Sunderland Students’ Union. Following their election, the team worked on a policy motion to submit for consideration ahead of the Conference. The submitted motion was entitled: “The negative effect of the current economic development on Higher Education”. After due consideration of this submission and the submissions of delegates from other students’ unions, the motion was combined into an eventual policy proposal entitled: “Campaign for international student equality”.
Our active participation in NUS campaigns and initiatives, are further aimed at amplifying student voices and driving positive change at the national level. Additionally, we held online elections for regional officers, further strengthening our representation within the NUS and ensuring that the interests of North East students are well-represented on a broader scale.
It was an honour to lead delegates in representing University of Sunderland students at the NUS National Conference, which hosted delegates from various students’ unions across the UK. The Conference included workshop sessions to deliberate on reform to NUS democracy, policy priorities and scrutinising the work of Democratic Procedure Committee (DPC), National Scrutiny Council, NUS UK Board and Returning Officer. There was also policy development workshop on the following themes:
The accepted and voted policies at the Conference are now being prioritised by NUS UK to run a national campaign for the next two years to achieve the national mandates for students. The Conference provided a valuable platform for student leaders from across the country to come together, exchange ideas, and shape the future of Higher Education. I returned inspired and motivated to continue advocating for the needs and interests of our student community. You can read more about NUS National Conference here.

Our Union Council meeting for the month of April was a productive session where we discussed important matters affecting our Students’ Union and made decisions on upcoming initiatives and policies. The ‘Change It’ platform submitted motion regarding a stance on solidarity with Palestine was voted on and approved by Union Council. I am proud of the collaborative spirit and dedication demonstrated by our council members as we work together to advance the interests of our student body.
As we announced towards the end of April, I am thrilled to that the University has taken a significant step towards greater support for international students by implementing an instalment-based payment plan for tuition fees, starting from September 2024. This initiative will provide much-needed financial flexibility and assistance to our international student community, ensuring that they can pursue their academic goals with confidence and peace of mind. I am delighted that my campaign for a flexible payment plan has helped to influence a positive change to support our students’ concerns in managing their finances while at the University.
The month of April also provided us with an opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity of cultures within our university community. Global Culture Day was a vibrant celebration of music, dance, food, and traditions from around the world, fostering unity and appreciation for our multi-cultural campus.
As we reflect on the events and achievements of April, let's carry forward the momentum and enthusiasm into the month ahead, especially as we enter exam and assessment season for many of you! I’d like to wish you all the best with those.
Until next time, stay engaged, stay empowered, and continue to make a difference!
