Free Period Products On Campus

By Your SU

We are pleased to confirm that free period products are now available across both Sunderland campuses, as a trial for Semester 2.

Over the past year, President: Wellbeing 23/24 Oladimeji Adepoju (Prince), Your SU and numerous students and societies have campaigned to ensure that free and accessible period products are made readily available whenever required on campus, in a way that respects individuals’ privacy and dignity. Societies involved in this campaign have included Alt & Rock Society, LGBTQ+ Society, Video Games Society, FemSoc and Cosy Corner Society.

We are grateful that the University has committed its backing and resources to this goal, by installing new dispensers in toilets across campus. The University has also provided an initial supply of products, enabling us to offer them to students for free on a trial basis in Semester 2.

As a result, we need your feedback and support to help us keep this service going! Please consider filling in this survey to let us know your thoughts: https://sunduni.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_24suTUs3E5BbBgq

Your feedback will help us to apply for external funding to replenish our stocks of period products for the future.

The wellbeing of our members is of paramount importance for us at Sunderland Students’ Union. Menstruation is a natural bodily function, yet the stigma associated with it persists. Unexpected periods can lead to feelings of embarrassment and discomfort, impacting the wellbeing of individuals. With the provision and availability of free period products, we can promote a supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable and confident, regardless of their menstrual cycle. It is imperative that we ensure an ongoing discreet and dignified experience for all members of our campus community.

As we continue to navigate through the challenges of the Cost of Living Crisis, this provision is also a tangible way in which we can support students, helping to relieve the financial strain associated with purchasing these necessities. You can find more information about support on the University’s online Cost of Living hub here: https://www.sunderland.ac.uk/student-experience/student-support/cost-of-living/

Once again, we would like to place on record our thanks to the University for their support and would urge students to give us their feedback so that we can continue to ensure free and readily available period products on campus.
